Thought Leadership

GlobalWorks thought leadership programs bring together experts and influencers from the civil society, donor, government, business and academic communities in order to share best practices and develop new ideas. GlobalWorks has played a particularly significant role in convening individuals driving change in Co-Governance and other governance models, as well as programs addressing inclusive and sustainable development.

Sustainable Labor Relations and Co-Governance

GlobalWorks convenes an annual Roundtable Conversation Regarding Effective Governance of Labor Rights in Global Supply Chains, with thought leaders from civil society, organized labor, academia and government. The 2019 conversation featured international labor law expert, Lance Compa, and provided a wide-ranging opportunity for brands and labor stakeholders to share constructive dialogue surrounding the future of co-governance and sustainable labor relations. The 2020 conversation will include consideration of the unique challenges facing workers and supply chains given the circumstances of the global pandemic and recession, and strategies for managing impacts in a socially responsible manner.

Programs for Government

GlobalWorks has convened briefings and dialogue programs with members of Congress, congressional staff and Executive Branch officials. Most recently GlobalWorks hosted a briefing for Capitol Hill policymakers to discuss the methods in which Global Value Chains can generate more good jobs in the US and developing countries. This topic has come up in the debate about American trade policy, but few have addressed strategies involving capacity building and reforms, an essential addition to any trade policy.

The briefing examined practical capacity building strategies for good governance and the rule of law – vital drivers of inclusive economic development abroad and protecting the interests of American workers and businesses.

The Project on Global Labor and Human Rights provides educational and training programs, research and analysis, and thought leadership regarding labor and human rights by addressing governance and rule of law vacuums in developing countries. This work has included programing led by GlobalWorks team members addressing gender based violence and harassment in global supply chains and business operations.
